Most of England, Wales and Northern Ireland are covered with a yellow warning for heavy rain, with up to 70mm expected to fall in some areas. And much of northern England and southern and central Scotland is covered by snow warnings. Forecaster Marco Petagna said: "With this rainfall we are certainly looking at some localised flooding in south-west England, Wales and Northern Ireland anywhere in the warning area.


France strikes cause travel chaos for rail and airline passengers

Travellers heading to, from and through France face chaos from Monday evening as strikes disrupt rail and air links. Railway workers are staging a series of two-day stoppages in protest against planned labour reforms by the national rail enterprise, SNCF. As a result 29 services from London to Paris and Brussels for Tuesday and Wednesday have been cancelled — representing around 25,000 seats. The then-prime minister, Alain Juppe, backed down after much of the French rail network was brought to a halt. Air France is inviting passengers booked to travel on Tuesday to switch to another travel date.

A spokesman for SNCF, France's national railway, said: "Only one in eight high-speed trains will be operating on Tuesday, with long delays expected on connecting services. Travel in France will be very difficult." Public servants providing vital services in institutions including hospitals and schools will also be walking out.
