Nearly 42 Million Americans Planning Memorial Day Travel, The Most in More Than a Dozen Years, Says AAAMemorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and Americans will kick off the season by traveling in near-record numbers. According to AAA, more than 41.5 million Americans will travel this holiday weekend, nearly five percent more than last year and the most since 2005. "The highest gas prices since 2014 won't keep travelers home this Memorial Day weekend," said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast Director of Public and Legislative Affairs. Record Memorial Day Travel Forecast Issued

A record number of Michigan residents are planning to hit the road for Memorial Day. Triple-A Michigan is projecting nearly 1.3 million of us in the state are planning a trip, up nearly 5% from last year. If realized, it will be the busiest Memorial Day weekend for tourism in over a dozen years in the state. Most people – 1.1 million – plan to drive, with air travel projected to be up 8% from last year at nearly 70,000 people. The projection marks the sixth straight year of increases in Michigan in the estimated number of people planning to travel for the holiday.

Memorial Day Travel Expected to Hit 13-Year High

This is an increase of 4.8 percent (4.6 percent in Ohio) and marks the highest Memorial Day travel volume since 2005. "The highest gas prices since 2014 won't keep travelers home this Memorial Day weekend," said Bill Sutherland, senior vice president, AAA Travel and Publishing. Planes: Nearly 89,000 Ohioans will fly this Memorial Day, 6.9 percent more than last year. The busiest travel times will be late afternoon Thursday and Friday (May 24-25), as commuters mix with holiday travel.
