VA Secretary Shulkin to pay back some travel expenses after Europe trip faulted

VA Secretary David Shulkin told lawmakers Thursday that he would repay more than $4,000 that was spent on his wife's airfare for an 11-day trip to Europe this past summer. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., has called on Shulkin to resign. Other Cabinet members, including Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, Energy Secretary Rick Perry and EPA chief Scott Pruitt, have acknowledged the use of government or private flights costing tens of thousands of dollars. In September, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price resigned amid questions about his use of private jets for government trips.

Shulkin to pay back travel expenses, turns attention back to unprecedented VA budget request

as declared in The IG said VA Chief of Staff Vivieca Wright Simpson altered emails to make it appear that Shulkin received an award to justify his wife's travel. But on Thursday morning, VA Committee Chairman Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) encouraged his colleagues to focus their questions on the department's fiscal 2019 budget request, not the IG findings. Members mostly had questions about the VA's 2019 budget proposal which totals an unprecedented $198.6 billion and is $12 billion more than the 2018 request. VA is spending more each year on community care, but Shulkin predicted the demand for the program would eventually level out. VA budget documents say the new hires would help address a growing appeals and accountability workload.
