Waivers rarely granted under Trump's latest travel ban

collected by :Frank Ithan

Transcript>> After President Donald Trump imposed his latest travel ban late last year startling new data from the US State Department shows how strictly it has been implemented. Between December 8th when the ban went into effect and January 8th more than 8400 people applied for US Visa's from the 8 countries included in the travel ban. But only around 100 waivers have been granted. So the fact that very few waivers have been granted shows that the process is pretty opaque and complicated.>> Courts across the US trumped down Trump's first two travel bans. But data shows that, even before the travel ban was in place, many applicants from those eight countries were refused tourist and business visas at higher rates.

ADVERTISEMENTUnder the travel ban, applicants who do not qualify for exemptions can apply for waivers in certain circumstances. Still, out of the 8,406 people to apply for visas in the month after the implementation of the travel ban, 1,723 were rejected for reasons other than the ban itself, according to the letter. Trump has repeatedly sought to ban travel to the U.S. from certain countries, most of them with predominantly Muslim residents. Courts rejected the first two iterations of the travel ban, and the Supreme Court is expected to weigh in on the third later this year. The Trump administration has argued that the travel ban is necessary to safeguard national security and prevent terrorists from entering the country.

As it stated in Since then, more than 100 additional waivers have been granted, the State Department told Reuters on Tuesday. A State Department official said the policy is being implemented as called for in the president's proclamation. The Trump administration has said the travel ban is needed to protect U.S. residents from terrorism. Courts struck down the first two versions of the Republican president's travel ban, and the current one is narrower in scope than its predecessors. In the first month after the travel ban took effect, more than 95 percent of U.S. visa applications from the countries were denied.
